I'm so glad you found the information useful. Not too long ago, I participated in a Writers Digest "plot boot camp," which I also found useful. Plotting isn't easy . . . Good luck to you!

Thanks a lot for spelling out the structure points like this! I'm struggling to find out where my story is lacking and I think I'll be able to get back on track now.

Hi Kim, I just want to thank you for such a clear and organized review of this book. I am about to review it on my own website, and I was looking for age recommendations. I found your review very thorough and helpful. Thanks for the great insights. Laura

For me, the opening paragraphs aren't always what determines if I'll continue reading. I've read books where the opening paragraphs are slow but the second chapter is where the story really begins to interest me. I've also read books where I didn't feel emotionally engaged until almost page 50. I think it depends on the mood of the reader. But there are some things I expect in the first chapter--to be introduced to at least two of the main characters and to feel like I am introduced to the setting in a way that I can visualize it. :)

[...] About a month ago I decided to analyze the structure of the books I review on this blog as one of a number of steps I’m taking to improve my writing. I’ve been using thriller writer Larry Brooks’ four-part plot structure as a guideline. You can read a summary of that structure here. [...]
